shards

In our third semester of Digital Media Design, we were given the opportunity to create a project based on our own interest. I wanted to experiment with VR / AR technology and use it in an unconventonal way. Shards is the result of this.

Shards uses the hand controller from the Oculus Rift to track the position of the gimbal in 3d space. I modelled and animated the scene in Maya and Cinema 4D, and brought a final FBX into Unity where the final project was rendered in real time.

It took a while to wrap my head around the technique, but the 3d camera acts not only as a 3d camera, but as a projector that's projecting the 3d image onto a 1:1 scale mash of the geometry. In the future, this system could be implemented to make watching VR experiences from the third person much more entertaining. a reactive lighting grid controlled through MIDI or DMX and a stereoscopic projection system could be implemented next to take the experience to the next level.
